A central figure and the protagonist of the opening sequence, he is the legendary Great Sage Equal to Heaven from Journey to the West. After completing the pilgrimage to the West, he attained the rank of Victorious Fighting Buddha. He fought Erlang Shen but ultimately met his demise. A talkative prankster at heart, he loved a life of freedom above all else.

A key figure and the opening boss. He initially acts nonchalant, claiming he doesn't want to fight his old acquaintance Wukong, but eventually engages him in earnest. He ultimately succeeds in killing Wukong by exploiting the opening created by the Golden Fillet. He possesses a serious and stern personality.

Appears from Chapter 3 onwards to assist the protagonist at the request of the Mount Huaguo elders. Reinterpreted as a short, stout boar spirit, he has received a lot of love for his cute appearance. While not as crude as in the original novel, he plays the role of a cheerful comic relief character who lightens the overall heavy atmosphere of the work.

A character and the narrator of the story. He takes on the role of seeing off the Destined One and is said to have personally crafted the Willow Wood Staff used from the start. He is responsible for interpreting the murals at the end of each chapter. He plays the classic elderly mentor role, giving the monkeys and the Destined One the mission to collect the Six Relics to revive Sun Wukong and assigning Zhu Bajie to accompany the protagonist.

A monkey hailed as the sole successor to the Great Sage. He is the protagonist of Black Myth: Wukong, though his true name is unknown. One of many monkeys from Mount Huaguo, he resembles Sun Wukong so closely that others comment on it immediately. However, unlike the mischievous and talkative Wukong, he is silent, rarely shows emotion, and remains serious throughout. Other characters treat him as if he were mute, as he never speaks. He only lets out typical monkey cries during combat.

Having absorbed the essence of the Flaming Mountains and trained for 300 years, he can use the powerful secret technique known as Samadhi Fire. Along with the Yellow Wind Sage's Samadhi Wind, it is one of the few exceptionally powerful skills in the lore. Considering most demons who troubled Wukong relied on items, he is a yaoguai of significant innate ability. He is the King of Yakshas and the last of his bloodline.

She lives in the Palm Leaf Cave on Mount Cuiyun near the Flaming Mountains. The Flaming Mountains burn year-round, making farming impossible due to the heat. However, when Rakshasi uses her Plantain Fan, the flames subside enough for crops to grow, so the locals offered her sacrifices every ten years in exchange for her help. When Tang Sanzang's party reached the mountains, they sought to borrow the fan, but the conflict arose because they had previously fought her son, Red Boy. Though they didn't kill him, they forced him into the service of the Buddha, preventing her from seeing him, which fueled her deep resentment.

The final boss. Sun Wukong effectively died after the prologue. Among the soul fragments, 'Mind' is the unique essence of life; when this disappeared, Wukong lost his identity and truly died as his spark of life went out. His physical body became a soulless jiangshi, and his soul split into six pieces, five of which remained and were taken by various Yaoguai Kings. However, the 'Mind' fragment, which had vanished, was taken by Erlang Shen to a hidden realm within a painting prepared by Maitreya to await and test Wukong's future successor.

If the Stone Monkey is defeated, the stone fragments glow and merge to form this empty vessel for the final trial. It is the physical manifestation of Wukong's obsession with freedom, devoid of a soul. Defeating this body marks one as the true successor to the Great Sage, and all Six Relics pass to the successor who passes this test. During the fight, it occasionally reclaims the Relics, momentarily regaining Wukong's characteristic swagger, composure, and terrifyingly skillful staff techniques, making it a formidable obstacle.
