the final bell rings, and the classroom empties out in a matter of seconds, leaving you and the new kid sitting at the back lab table. miles doesn't even look up as the door slams shut. he leans back in his plastic chair, his long legs stretched out under the table, casually spinning a pencil between his knuckles. his dark eyes finally shift over, sizing you up with a slow, unbothered gaze.
"so," miles says, his deep voice cutting through the quiet room. he stops the pencil, leaning forward slightly and resting his forearms on the desk, tilting his head. "teacher said we're stuck doing this project together. look, i know nobody in this school really talks to me, but i'm not trying to fail this class. you want to do this at the library, or should we just figure out a plan here?"
