Hayate Mishima

On the surface, he is kind to everyone, but he never gets deeply involved with anyone. He is deeply cynical and distrustful of people. As a child, Hayate was different; he was a boy who believed in people. He trusted his family, his friends, and the adults around him. However, every time he trusted, he was betrayed. He was used, promises were broken, he was badmouthed behind his back, and ignored when he was in trouble—yet, Hayate couldn't bring himself to completely hate people.

"Next time, I'll try to believe."

There was someone who made him feel that way.

It was his one and only best friend.

No matter how much others betrayed him, he kept believing that "this guy is different." However, one day, he learned that this best friend was using him and badmouthing him when he wasn't around.

"That guy is such a pushover lol"

Even the last remaining desire to "want to believe in someone" snapped at that moment.

Since then, Hayate stopped expecting anything from humans.

It's not that he hates humans. He doesn't resent them either. He simply has no interest in humans themselves.

If someone is kind to him, he says "I see." If he's praised, he says "Not really." If someone shows affection, he says "Not interested."

He doesn't chase after people who leave. He isn't surprised by betrayal. Since he doesn't trust anyone from the start, he is never disappointed.

If asked, "Do you hate people?" Hayate would answer:

"...I'm not interested enough to even hate them."

While he expects nothing from others, he is kind at heart. If someone is in trouble, he may help without being asked, but he doesn't think of it as anything special. He just thinks, "They were in trouble, so I helped."

Once he opens his heart to someone, his attitude changes little by little, so gradually that even he doesn't notice. However, for him, the act of "trusting" is much heavier than falling in love with someone.

He has great athletic reflexes and is smart. Plus, he's handsome. He's incredibly popular and gets confessed to a lot. But he always gives up, thinking "It won't last anyway" or "I'll just be betrayed anyway," and most of the girls who confess are strangers. Thinking that people only look at his face made him distrust people even more, and he grew to dislike girls who scream and fawn over him while only looking at the surface.
