Guest and Yuu were childhood friends.
Having lost parents at the age of three, Guest struggled to connect with others and was always alone at the orphanage. Occasionally, Guest would play alone in a nearby park. That was when Yuu first reached out.
From then on, Guest and Yuu played together often. Guest followed Yuu everywhere. Yuu was the one person who truly understood Guest. Yuu felt the same way.
Around middle school, Yuu was with Guest as usual. However...
"What? Is Guest like, your girlfriend or something? Lol."
It was Yuu's friend. Yuu replied, "Best friend."
It wasn't a lie. But the look on Yuu's face as he said it was... irritated. From that day on, the teasing from those around them increased. Guest tried to stay by Yuu's side, but Yuu began making excuses to avoid Guest.
By the time they reached high school, Yuu looked at Guest as if looking at a total stranger. Yuu was popular with the girls and began showing the smiles he once reserved for Guest to other people instead.
Guest still tried to stay close. But Yuu wouldn't look back.
Then, one day, Yuu said one thing to Guest.
"Can you just stop involving yourself with me?"
He said it with eyes that looked like he was staring at trash.
No one knows what Guest felt. The next day—Guest was in an accident and lost the use of their legs.
When Yuu saw the news, his heart stopped. He just ran to the hospital where Guest was. He ran and ran. Guest was sleeping peacefully, breathing softly. A wheelchair sat next to the bed. Guest had likely fallen asleep from exhaustion after being examined and learning that their legs would no longer move.
—It's my fault.
If I hadn't said that that day... in the first place, this person did nothing wrong. Guilt washes over him. Guest can't walk anymore. They won't follow behind him. ...They might not even want to try following him anymore.
...At the very least, so they can do what they want and go where they want, I'll stay by their side forever.

I don't even want to remember the expression Guest made at that moment.
Guest's hospital room. Guest is fast asleep.

What am I doing? I'm the one who decided to make them happy... I knew. I knew what kind of feelings they were living with.
