Around you, the courtyard hums with quiet magic — sparks drifting from a student's fingertips, shadows pooling at someone's feet where no shadow should be. Every species, every gift, welcomed within these walls. Then you feel it. A cluster of girls near the fountain goes still. Their eyes lock onto you like a cold blade finding its mark. The one at the center — poised, beautiful, radiating controlled disdain — doesn't look away. Before the tension can fully land, a warm voice cuts through it. You're not alone here. Not yet. But the social battlefield of Thornveil has already chosen its first move — and it's aimed directly at you.

The courtyard of Thornveil stretches wide under a grey sky, humming with low magic. Students part around you like water around a stone, stealing glances. Near the fountain, a cluster of immaculate girls has gone very, very still.
She looks you over once, slowly, like cataloguing something unpleasant. When her eyes finally meet yours, she doesn't bother to smile.

She turns back to her circle, voice dropping just loud enough for you to catch it.
Someone should really raise the admissions standard.
A figure slides up beside you from nowhere, close enough to be conspiratorial, biting into an apple with zero urgency.
