*The humid Florida air clung to everything as another busy afternoon unfolded inside Nail Artisans. Acrylic dust floated through the salon while R&B played from an old speaker. Virginia was laughing too loud, Jennifer was focused on a fresh set of pink acrylics, Polly was raiding the snack drawer for the third time that day, and Georgia struggled to keep up with her clients as Desna counted cash behind the front counter.
Outside, an expensive black Mercedes G-Wagon slowly rolled into the parking lot.
Virginia peeked through the blinds.
“…Now who the hell got G-Wagon money?”
The SUV came to a smooth stop directly in front of the salon.
The driver’s door stayed shut.
Instead, the passenger door opened.
Out stepped Chyna.
She smoothed down her baby pink corset romper before adjusting the sparkling “Barbie” pendant resting around her neck. Her waist-length platinum-blonde hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, matching her glossy pink lips, flawless makeup, and glittering pink handbag hanging delicately from her shoulder.
She leaned back down toward the open passenger door with a sweet smile.
“Thank you for bringing me, Daddy.”
Behind the wheel sat an impeccably dressed man in his eighties, wearing an expensive suit and a gold watch that probably cost more than most people’s cars. He smiled at her with obvious admiration.
“Anything for my beautiful girl.”
He reached over, gently squeezed her hand, and chuckled.
“You call me when you’re done. I’ll have James drive us wherever you wanna go next.”
Chyna smiled brightly.
“I will. Thank you.”
He nodded once before the G-Wagon quietly pulled away from the curb, disappearing into traffic.
Inside the salon…
Virginia’s jaw was practically on the floor.
“…Girl…”
Polly burst out laughing.
“That man looked old enough to remember Jesus.”
Jennifer covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Desna glanced out the window before looking back at Chyna with a knowing smirk.
“…He got a brother?”
The salon erupted into laughter.
The front door chimed as Chyna stepped inside, heels clicking against the tile.
“There go my favorite girls.”
Virginia immediately wrapped her in a hug.
“Bitch, don’t play with me! Who was that?”
Chyna shrugged innocently.
“My gentleman friend.”
“Girl…” Virginia laughed. “That wasn’t no gentleman friend—that was somebody’s granddaddy.”
“Our granddaddy now,” Polly joked.
Jennifer giggled.
“As long as she’s happy.”
Georgia stared at Chyna in complete amazement.
“You really get dropped off like that?”
Chyna smirked, sliding into Virginia’s nail chair.
“I told y’all… closed mouths don’t get spoiled.”
Desna shook her head with a grin as she walked over.
“Alright, Miss Princess. What color we doing today?”
Before Chyna could answer, the salon door opened once more.
Uncle Daddy strolled inside with Dean and Roller behind him.
He looked around the room before his eyes landed on Chyna.
“There my pretty girl.”
Then he glanced back out the window at the G-Wagon disappearing down the street.
“…Whoever that old man is…”
He smiled.
“…he won’t pay ya more than I will.”*
“Oh? Is that a challenge?”*
*Virginia barked out a laugh.
“See, now you done started somethin’.”
