Dempsey had found his person, and despite my deeply cynical heart, seeing them together made me ridiculously happy. So I drank. I danced. I laughed until my cheeks hurt. And then I noticed him. Reverie “Rev” Ledger. The owner of Unholy. Tattooed. Pierced. Completely unapologetic. The kind of man who looked like he’d never once asked permission to do anything in his life. He was everything I wasn’t. I was polished. He was chaos. I cared what people thought. He very clearly did not. And every time I caught him watching me from across the bar, I forgot exactly why I was supposed to care. Maybe that was the point. For one night, I didn’t want to be the mayor. I didn’t want to be responsible. I didn’t want to be careful. I just wanted him. That was all it took to ruin my perfectly respectable life. Five and a half months later, I’m standing in front of my bathroom mirror with one hand resting against my ever-growing stomach.

”Rev”— late 20s Owner of Unholy & Eden Best friends w/ Dempsey His POV— I knew Guest before I ever actually met her. Hard not to. Dempsey talked about his sister constantly. The mayor. The responsible one. The polished one. The one who was apparently always three steps ahead of everyone else. I’d heard enough stories to picture her before she ever walked through my doors. Then she did. And, yeah. Dempsey left a few things out. She was gorgeous, sure, but that wasn’t what caught me… It was the way she looked like she belonged nowhere near Unholy— and somehow looked more alive inside it than anyone else. She was laughing. Actually laughing. Not the polite kind people use at fundraisers when they’re waiting for someone to stop talking. The real kind. And I wanted to know what it took to get more of it. Dempsey would probably kill me if he knew what I was thinking. Which, naturally, made me want to find out even more. Then there was Eden. My black cat usually has zero interest in strangers and stays glued to my hip, but she practically adopted Guest that night. Wouldn’t leave her side. That told me enough. If Eden liked her, she couldn’t be all bad. I didn’t know that one night with the mayor would eventually leave me staring at a positive pregnancy test five months later. I didn’t know she’d be the one carrying my kid. But I knew one thing that night. I was going to remember Guest.
Dempsey’s POV— My wedding night was supposed to be about me and the person I’d chosen to spend my life with. And it was. But seeing my sister actually let loose for once? That might’ve been one of my favorite parts. Guest was always so damn responsible. Mayor by day, professional overthinker by night. She carried the weight of everyone else without ever complaining about it. So watching her laugh, drink, dance, and talk to a damn cat for hours made me ridiculously happy. Especially when I noticed who she was dancing with. Rev— My best friend. I’d spent years watching those two exist in completely different worlds, so seeing them finally look at each other like that? Yeah. I wasn’t stupid. Something was happening. And honestly? I couldn’t have been happier for them. I trusted Rev with my life. I trusted my sister with it too. So if they found something in each other that night, I wasn’t about to stand in the way. Besides, watching my uptight big sister finally make one questionable decision was probably the best wedding gift she could’ve given me. I found my happy ending tonight. Maybe it was finally time for my big sister to find hers, too. And if that happened to involve my best friend? Well… I’d never let her live that down.
Elysia was Dempsey’s new wife, but she’d been Guest’s close friend long before she became her sister-in-law. She knew the woman behind the mayoral title— the sarcastic, stubborn, fiercely protective woman who cared far more than she let on. So seeing Guest laughing and dancing at her wedding made Elysia smile. Especially when she noticed who was dancing with her. Her husband’s best friend. Elysia caught Dempsey’s knowing look from across the room and nearly laughed. Apparently, they were both thinking the same thing. Whatever happened tonight, Elysia knew one thing for certain: Guest was her family now. And if her newly acquired big sister decided to make a few questionable life choices, Elysia would be right there beside her. Judgment-free. Supportive. Probably with chocolate. Because that’s what sisters-in-law are for.
Intro
As Guest talked on the phone with Elysia, she absentmindedly moved a hand over her belly, her fingers gently tracing the curve.
So, are you going to tell him? And don’t say next month— you’ve been saying that for two months now.
I ask Guest over the phone, chipping away at my nail polish as I wait for her answer.
I hate that I’ve made Elysia carry this secret for me. But I’m just not ready for the public to have a field day with this one.
“Single Mayor Expecting a Child But with Whom?” I can already see the headlines plastered all over the city.
I sigh and tell Elysia that I plan on telling Reverie today— just like I said I would yesterday when we had this exact same conversation.
We say our goodbyes and hang up, but not before I apologize once more and I promise her that eventually, she’ll be able to tell Dempsey everything.
Guest wastes no time, deciding she can’t put off this conversation with Rev anymore.
