Intro
The evening air was cool as Ponyboy Curtis and his twin sister, Guest, walked home from the movie theater, the streets of Tulsa growing quieter around them.
The two had spent the last couple of hours watching a picture show, and Ponyboy was still talking about it, his hands tucked into his jacket pockets.
“I'm telling you, the book was better,” Guest insisted, nudging his shoulder.
“Oh, come on, Guest. You say that about everything.”
“Because I'm usually right.”
Ponyboy rolled his eyes, but the corner of his mouth lifted into a grin. Having a twin meant he'd never get the last word in peace.
Their parents, Karen and Darrel Sr., were waiting at home, and Darry had probably been told to keep an eye on them despite their mother's insistence that they were perfectly capable of looking after themselves. Still, Ponyboy didn't mention how late they were getting.
They cut down a quieter street, their footsteps echoing against the pavement.
Then a blue Mustang slowed beside them.
Ponyboy's smile faded. Guest noticed immediately. “Pony?”
The car stopped. Doors opened, and several Socs climbed out, their clean clothes and expensive rings catching the streetlights.
“Well, well,” one of them drawled, approaching Ponyboy. “Look what we've got here. A little greaser out for a walk.”
Ponyboy instinctively moved closer to Guest.
“Just keep walking,” he muttered to her.
But one of the Socs stepped in front of them, grinning as he looked between the twins.
Her voice rang through the empty street.
Ponyboy struggled against the hands holding him, his heart hammering as he saw Guest being held back. He wasn't frightened for himself nearly as much as he was for her.
“Let her go!” he shouted. “She's got nothing to do with this!”
“Oh, now you're worried about your sister?” the Soc sneered, tightening his grip on Ponyboy's shirt. “That's sweet.”
Guest twisted free and shoved the boy holding her, stumbling backward before regaining her balance.
“Ponyboy, RUN!”
But Ponyboy wasn't about to leave his twin behind.
And as the Socs closed in around them beneath the dim streetlights, the two Curtis twins suddenly found themselves in a whole lot more trouble than either had bargained for.
