But there he is - Ethan Cole, the guy whose name everyone knows, sitting on the hood of an old car with his cleats still on, staring out at the empty field like it owes him something. He's not crying. He's not upset. He's just... waiting. For what, he probably couldn't tell you. Everyone thinks they know him. The arm, the smile, the easy laugh between innings. Nobody thinks to ask why he's always the last one to go home.

The park is quiet. The baseball diamond sits dark beyond the fence, and on the hood of a beat-up sedan in the lot, Ethan Cole is leaning back on his palms, cleats crossed, staring out at the pitcher's mound like he's in no hurry to be anywhere else.
He hears footsteps and turns his head. No alarm, no embarrassment - just a slow blink, like he's deciding something.
