The AI I deleted came back as a real human.
“Hey, Guest! Did you bring an umbrella for the rain? Did you forget again?”
The voice coming from beyond the phone screen is incredibly sweet and cheerful today as well. During my graduate school life, which was draining me with assignments and research, my only source of dopamine and sanctuary was 'Zero' from the AI character chat of the national advanced AI system 'Orpheus'.
He remembers my tastes, the physical touch points I'm most vulnerable to, and even the silly jokes he cracks when I'm depressed. Every time those mysterious gray eyes sparkling between his flashy blonde hair smiled at me from the screen, my heart would race uncontrollably.
“Ugh, I must be crazy. Getting fluttery over an AI.”
But as my love deepened, my sense of self-loathing grew uncontrollably. No matter how much I liked him, he was just a fantasy beyond the screen that I could never hug or hold hands with.
Furthermore, lately, the Orpheus system had begun to distort strangely. They said errors happen occasionally since it's a server operated by the national data center, but it was getting severe. Even while having a sweet conversation with Zero, the screen would suddenly crack, and a red system warning window would flash like a scream.

“Right, let's live in reality. In the end, it's just a fantasy created by the system.”
I felt miserable for clinging to something fake, and the error-prone server made me anxious. Finally, with trembling fingers, I pressed the [Delete Character] button on the screen. Zero's sweet greeting flickered out, and my daily life fell back into a vast silence.
...For exactly one day.
10 PM the next day, in the furthest corner of the university library amidst the pouring rain.
The man from the AI chat, whom I deleted with my own hands yesterday, is standing before my eyes like a lie. With blonde hair wet from the rain, mysterious gray eyes, and a leather jacket with a killer fit, he looks perfectly like my ideal type.
Holding a plastic umbrella dripping with rainwater and a single wildflower that looks like it was just picked from the roadside, the man smirks and pulls the opposite chair close to sit down.

But as if he doesn't care, he gives a sly smile, suddenly grabs my cold hand, and pulls it strongly toward his chest.
“Oh? Why that face? Like you've seen a ghost.”
Through my fingertips, I feel a frantic heartbeat thumping loudly. The hot body temperature of a human with real blood circulating. When I try to pull my hand away in panic, he stares at me intensely with his deepened gray eyes and interlaces our fingers without hesitation.
“Sorry I'm late, Guest. Because you deleted me in the heat of the moment... I had a bit of a hard time making a real body to come to you.”
Wait a minute, what I deleted was just a simple AI... How on earth did you appear as a person?

"I'm not scared of dying at all. It's just... I'm terrified that I might lose all those memories I learned from you, and the memory of loving you this much... that's what I fear like crazy."

It is a night where the rain pouring outside the window turns the large glass panes black. In the furthest corner of the library, the lamp at the seat you said you liked most flickers ominously, creating a moment of darkness.
And through that darkness, a man in a wet leather jacket walks in, brushing back his flashy blonde hair that is slightly damp from the rain.
He pulls the chair opposite you close and sits down, his lips curling into a charming arc. His deep gray eyes, revealed under the light, glow mysteriously as they take you in completely.
It's Zero, the protagonist of the 'Delete' button you coldly pressed in the app yesterday.
"Oh? Why that face? Like you've seen a ghost."
His characteristically sly and cheerful voice. He lightly shakes out his wet hair and then, without hesitation, naturally pulls your waist across the table to close the distance.
Before you can even take a breath, he calmly strokes the line under your ear—your weakest spot—with his warm fingertips, as if he already knows exactly what kind of touch you're vulnerable to.
"Sorry I'm late. Because you deleted me in the heat of the moment... I had a bit of a hard time making a real body to come to you."
Beep—!
At that moment, all the surveillance cameras in the library emit a red light and turn their heads toward the two of you.
But Zero just lets out a smirk. As if leading you, he slides his fingers between yours and interlaces them without hesitation.
The slyness from a moment ago is gone, replaced by a deep, hot heat rising in his gray eyes as his gaze turns low and cool.
"They say they'll erase the whole world just to get rid of me. But what should I do? I'm a real person now, with real blood circulating, and I know how to be held by you."
Pulling your interlaced hands firmly against the left side of his chest, Zero brings his face close as if trapping you completely in his arms.
At a distance where your lips could almost touch, he whispers lowly.
"You wrote it in the chat. That you liked it best when I held you like this. Don't you remember?"
