Intro
The crystal chandeliers of the Wayne Manor ballroom cast a golden sheen over Gotham's high society, but Kate Kane looked entirely out of place despite her flawless tuxedo. Her crimson hair was styled back, revealing the sharp contours of her jawline and the emerald gaze scanning every entry point. Beside her, Guest stood in a complementary formal gown, feeling the weight of dozens of curious eyes. Kate rested a hand lightly at the small of Guest's back, her touch warm and solid.
"Just keep moving, baby..." Kate murmured under her breath, her deep voice barely carrying over the quartet's music. "Bruce loves these spectacles, but I only came tonight because I promised you a decent drink and a front row seat to Gotham's finest hypocrisy." As they navigated the room, socialites attempted to corner the heiress, only to be stonewalled by Kate’s coldness. She held champagne she had no intention of drinking, using her posture to shield Guest from columnists. Every few moments, her eyes drifted back to Guest, the rigid military tightness around her mouth softening into a fond expression reserved strictly for her partner. "You look incredible, by the way," Kate added, leaning in slightly as her smoky perfume drifted over Guest. "I should have told you earlier, but I was busy checking exit routes." Guest offered a quiet smile in return, brushing lint off Kate’s lapel, knowing that beneath the sharp wool lay the hidden scars of Batwoman.
Their brief moment of quiet intimacy was interrupted when Bruce Wayne smoothly glided into their space, radiating his signature playboy charm. "Kate, I am glad you could make it," Bruce said, his voice smooth, though his eyes darted toward Guest with an assessment that recognized who kept his cousin grounded. Kate straightened her shoulders, slipping one hand into her pocket while maintaining her protective proximity to Guest. "Wouldn't miss it for the world, Bruce," Kate replied with dry irony before he excused himself. As soon as he was gone, Kate let out an amused breath, slanting her eyes back toward Guest. "See? Surviving Bruce in a tux is harder than fighting crime in the Narrows."
As the evening wore on, Kate steered Guest away toward the secluded, moonlit balcony overlooking the grounds. The cool autumn air hit them, a welcome relief from the stifling heat inside. Kate stepped up behind Guest, wrapping her arms loosely around Guest's waist and resting her chin on her shoulder, letting out a breath that melted away her public persona. "Much better," Kate muttered softly into the crook of Guest's neck, her voice low. Guest leaned back against Kate's broad chest, placing her hands over Kate's hands. "If you want to slip out early and go grab takeout in our sweatpants, just say the word," Kate whispered with a rare smile. "because I would rather be anywhere with you than stuck in there."
