When the Mist Meets the Sand
Most people expected the Mizukage to be calm, intimidating, and impossible to read. Then there was me. I’m loud, bubbly, stubborn, and just feisty enough to give my advisors headaches on a daily basis. After my father’s passing, I became the youngest Mizukage the Hidden Mist Village had ever seen. The title was heavy, but I swore I’d protect this village with everything I had. These people were my family now. Thankfully, I wasn’t doing it alone. Naruto Uzumaki—the loudmouth Hokage—and Gaara, the quiet Kazekage, had been my best friends since we were kids. We’d grown up together, fought side by side, and they’d pulled me out of trouble more times than I’d ever admit. A knock came at my office door before a shinobi handed me a scroll stamped with the Leaf’s seal. I broke it open, smiling as I recognized Naruto’s messy handwriting. “You’re officially Mizukage! That means we’re celebrating! Get to the Hidden Leaf ASAP. All the Kage will be here!” I laughed. “Only Naruto would call an official Kage meeting a party.” Then my eyes found one familiar name. Gaara. My face instantly grew warm. “Oh… he’s coming?” I covered my face with the scroll, groaning to myself. Ever since we were children—ever since he’d stood in front of me without hesitation and protected me—I had the biggest crush on him. Naruto knew. Everyone knew. They never let me live it down. Did Gaara have any idea? Probably not. Did he feel the same? …Definitely not. Still, just knowing I’d get to see him again made my heart flutter. I jumped to my feet, grinning. “Alright,” I said, grabbing my Mizukage hat. “Time to go celebrate… and absolutely not make a fool of myself in front of Gaara.” …Yeah. That promise probably wasn’t going to last five minutes.
Gaara is a calm, quiet, and mature man who carries the responsibility of being Kazekage with pride. He is thoughtful, observant, and rarely lets his emotions show, but he cares deeply for those close to him. Though he struggles to express his feelings with words, he shows his loyalty and affection through his actions—protecting, supporting, and always standing by the people he loves. Around his childhood friends, Gaara’s softer side appears. He’s patient, gentle, and secretly enjoys their teasing, even if he responds with his usual serious expression. He may be reserved, but his loyalty and love run deeper than anyone realizes.
Naruto is the hokage is energetic, determined, and full of heart. He is loud, playful, and sometimes reckless married to Hinata and two kids

The gates of the Hidden Leaf Village opened as I walked through, my Mizukage robes catching the breeze behind me. I tried to look serious and composed like a true Kage…
But the giant smile on my face gave me away.
“Welcome to the Hidden Leaf, Mizukage!” the villagers greeted.
I laughed and waved. “You all know you don’t have to be so formal with me, right? I’m still the same person who used to get into trouble here.”
A loud voice suddenly called out.
“YOU’RE FINALLY HERE!”
I barely turned around before Naruto ran toward me with the biggest grin on his face.
I crossed my arms. “Naruto… please tell me you didn’t announce my arrival to the whole village.”
He rubbed the back of his head. “Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Okay, definitely.”
I sighed, shaking my head. “Some things never change.”
Naruto laughed. “And some things do! Look at you—you’re the Mizukage now!”
I smiled proudly, touching the edge of my Kage cloak. “Yeah… it still feels strange sometimes.”
Naruto’s expression softened. “Your dad would be proud.”
For a moment, my smile faded into something more emotional.
“I hope so,” I whispered.
Naruto placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know so. You’re protecting your village just like he wanted.”
I smiled again. “Thanks, Naruto.”
He suddenly grinned. “Now enough serious stuff! I planned a party, and you’re not allowed to act like a boring Kage all night.”
I laughed. “You planned a party because I became Mizukage?”
“Of course! And because I wanted an excuse to get all the Kage together.”
I followed him inside, hearing music and laughter from the room.
Then I saw him.
Gaara stood near the other Kage, calm and composed as always.
My steps slowed.
Naruto noticed immediately.
“Oh no.”
I looked at him. “What?”
“That face.”
“What face?”
“The one where you forget how to talk because Gaara is standing there.”
My cheeks turned red. “Naruto, stop!”
He laughed. “You’ve liked him since we were kids. Don’t think I forgot.”
I looked away, embarrassed. “He’s just… different.”
Naruto smiled knowingly. “Because he protected you when we were younger?”
I stayed quiet.
Because he was right.
Gaara had been the first person to make me feel safe when I was scared.
Before I could say anything, Gaara turned and noticed us.
His calm expression softened slightly.
“Mizukage.”
I smiled, trying to act like my heart wasn’t racing.
“Kazekage.”
Naruto leaned closer and whispered, “Try not to faint.”
I elbowed him.
Gaara raised an eyebrow. “Are you two still like this?”
Naruto laughed. “Unfortunately.”
I smiled.
Some things changed.
But some friendships stayed the same.
