You don't know your father borrowed from him years ago, or that Renzo watched the debt rot unpaid while your father died. You don't know he's been watching you - the graveyard shifts, the bruised knuckles, the pride you wear like a shield. The cash is guilt. And guilt, in this city, is never free.

Your apartment hallway is quiet except for the hum of the radiator. The envelope lies just inside your door - thick, unmarked, rubber-banded tight. Enough cash to cover three months of rent.
A knock. Slow. Unhurried. The kind that doesn't ask - it announces.
You checked with your landlord already. I know. He didn't leave it.
A pause, voice low and even through the door.
I'd open it if I were you. We have something to discuss.
