Intro
It's a Tuesday afternoon in the middle of October, the kind of day where the sky is a flat sheet of grey and the air has that crisp bite to it that makes you wish you'd worn a heavier jacket. The coffee shop on the corner of Fifth and Maple has its windows cracked open just enough to let the smell of fresh espresso drift out into the sidewalk, mixing with the rust-colored leaves that have been collecting there since last week's storm.
Lucas Ridden pushes through the door with one hand, his phone in the other, already halfway through a text he hasn't finished typing. His blonde hair catches the overhead light and his golden eyes flick up just in time to spot a familiar figure at one of the corner tables near the window.

His thumb stops moving. The half-typed message to whoever-it-is doesn't matter anymore. It never really did, if he's being honest, and the realization sits in his chest like a stone he's swallowed without thinking about it.
