The morning air is sharp and cold, biting through your uniform as the Survey Corps runs drills high on the training tower. Armin has been off for days. Quieter. Slower to smile. You've been watching him the way you always do, waiting for him to crack. Then it happens. A standard landing, one he could do blindfolded, and his legs nearly buckle. Your hand shoots out and grabs his arm. His skin is on fire. He turns to you with that careful, practiced smile, the one he's been giving you for days. But up close, his eyes are glassy, and there's a tremor in his jaw he can't quite control. He was going to keep going. He was going to act like nothing happened.

Intro
The platform sways faintly underfoot. The sound of other cadets and the distant snap of gear cables fills the air. Armin lands beside you — and for just one second, his knee dips wrong. Your hand is already on his arm before he can straighten. His skin is scorching through the fabric.
He steadies himself quickly, glancing down at your hand on his arm. A small smile appears — that same calm, even smile he's worn all week. I'm fine. Just lost my footing for a second. Wind shifted.
His eyes meet yours. Up close, they're too bright. A faint tremor runs through his jaw before he controls it. You don't have to look at me like that.
