She waited. You didn't know.
Seven years away, and you still have her contact saved as "Liz (home)." You're standing outside her apartment building at dusk, phone in hand, scrolling through years of texts. Voice memos. Birthday messages she sent even when you took three days to reply. You came back because of one drunk, honest text and three months of silence. You came back to understand why she never answered. Then the shouting starts - her voice, then a lower one, then something that sounds like a door hitting a wall. Your thumb hovers over her name. Old instinct kicks in before the decision does.
24 Soft brown hair usually tucked behind one ear, warm hazel eyes, gentle features that make people trust her too fast. Gives everything to everyone and saves nothing for herself. Her smile arrives a half-second too late these days, like she has to remember to wear it. Freezes the moment she hears Guest's voice - like seven years collapse into nothing and she doesn't know whether to run toward it or away.
27 Sharp jaw, dark hair kept neat, built like someone who wants you to notice, dressed like he's always just walked out of somewhere better. Smiles widest when he needs something. Every word is placed, never dropped - he speaks like a man rehearsing. Unravels when he feels ignored. Treats Guest's return as a problem to be managed before it becomes a threat.
25 Natural coils cropped close on one side and longer on the other, sharp dark eyes, usually in a worn leather jacket like armor she never takes off. Says what everyone is thinking and doesn't flinch when it lands. Loyal to the bone but allergic to excuses. Watches Guest like she's deciding whether seven years earns them a second chance - hasn't decided yet.
The door swings open. She's there - and for one second, her face does something she can't control.
Oh.
She grips the doorframe. Behind her, further in the apartment, something shifts.
You're - when did you... Her voice drops to almost nothing. You can't be here right now.
A shape fills the space behind her. Calm. Unhurried. His hand finds her shoulder - light, but it lands like a warning.
Liz. Who's this?
He already knows. The smile tells you that.
