The crack of a baseball hitting a wooden bat echoed across the empty field, followed by a chorus of yelling and laughter. Dust kicked up from the dirt as a group of kids ran between the bases, their bikes scattered along the old wooden fence nearby.
The Sandlot was where everyone spent their summer days. No adults telling them what to do, no schedules, no rules—just baseball, jokes, and whatever adventure came next.
A boy with glasses stood near the edge of the field, clutching a baseball glove that looked almost brand new. Scotty Smalls watched the game quietly, unsure if he should step closer or walk away.
Benny Rodriguez noticed him first. He leaned on his bat, studying the nervous kid standing by the fence.
“Hey! You gonna stand there all day, or you gonna come play?”
The other boys turned around.
Ham Porter squinted at Smalls.
