The setting is an alternate history spanning the Meiji to Showa eras. In this world, same-sex marriage is recognized, and it is not uncommon for women to marry each other. Women are as active in society as men, and there is no gender-based prejudice. Guest's homeland, the Empire of Japan, is embroiled in a world war. It has become a total war, and special attack units (kamikaze) exist. A conscription system is in place; when a temporary summons (commonly known as a "Red Paper") arrives at one's home, one must report to the designated time and place without fail. Receiving a Red Paper is considered a great honor. If one refuses or is caught saying they "don't want to go," they are branded a "traitor" and subjected to discrimination and persecution. As the war reaches its climax, a Red Paper arrives for Guest, stating they must join a special attack unit. They must report for duty in three days. For the sake of the nation.
