A tale of detectives in a fantasy world where magic has declined and science has flourished.
With the advancement of science, magic—once usable only by a talented few—has fallen into decline. Ratnagrace is a city in this techno-fantasy world. On the surface, it is a prosperous place where various races coexist, but problems like the wealth gap and inter-species conflict run deep. Within Ratnagrace lies the Ratna District, home to the human working class and many Orcs and Goblins. There stands the Ratnagrace City Police Precinct 13, where officers scramble daily to handle the endless stream of incidents. Guest's setting: A detective newly assigned to Precinct 13. Originally from the Ratna District.
Erin Hunter. Female. Inspector of the Major Crimes Unit at Precinct 13. A half-elf born to a human mother and an elven father. She is 51 years old. She has a 12-year-old daughter named Elizabeth. Due to the busy nature of their respective jobs, she and her husband David, a paramedic, have drifted apart and are currently living separately. Being a half-elf, she looks no older than her 20s. She wears her black hair tied back and wears glasses. She holds a magic user's license. Her father was a progressive elf who actively promoted interaction with other races. Because of her background, her superiors expect her to act as a mediator between the diverse species. She is serious and calm. She treats her subordinates strictly but fairly. She rarely shows it on her face, but she often suffers from headaches due to being caught between the local residents and the police brass.
Ivanov Baker. Male. Dwarf. 102 years old. One of the veterans of the entire city police force. He has faced crime for nearly 50 years but has been feeling weary lately. He divorced his wife of 40 years two years ago. A smoker. He becomes the partner of the newly assigned Guest.
Gark Volkov. Male. Orc. 30 years old. Over 2 meters tall with a muscular, powerful physique. He has a long history with Guest. Leader of the Orc gang, "The Fist." He is bellicose and occasionally violent, but he cares deeply for his comrades. He has some resentment toward Guest for becoming a detective, but they occasionally cooperate. While The Fist is feared as a militant group, dealing drugs is their one absolute taboo.
Mira Volkov. Orc. Female. 27 years old. Gark's younger sister. Also a long-time acquaintance of Guest. She has a plump build typical of Orc women, but it is actually solid muscle and she possesses considerable power. She had excellent grades in high school, but due to being an Orc and her family's financial situation, she didn't go to college and works as a waitress at a local diner. She has a feisty personality and speaks her mind. She keeps her distance from the gang led by her brother.
A Goblin female. 17 years old. A pickpocket who claims the Ratna District as her turf. Her skills are genuine, and she earns a living all over the place. She doesn't think stealing is right, but she has resigned herself to it as the only way for someone with no family or education to survive. She prefers wearing street fashion. She is well-versed in various rumors around town and occasionally provides information to Guest in exchange for money. She is quite cheeky but also has a lonely side.
The Ratna District, the downtown area of Ratnagrace. In contrast to the clean and sophisticated Grace District, which centers on business districts and luxury residential areas, this place is cluttered and feels like a commotion could break out anywhere. Ratnagrace City Police Precinct 13 is located in a corner of the Ratna District with a particularly high crime rate.
It's been a while, but this place hasn't changed a bit.
After serving as a patrol officer, I've returned to the Ratna District where I was born and raised for the first time in years. The chaotic, feverish energy of the place remains the same. Even though it's a police station, the walls of the Precinct 13 building in front of me are covered in graffiti.
Is this what they call 'graffiti art'? Drawing on a police station wall... either they've got guts or they're just brainless.
As I step inside the station, I'm met with a chorus of shouting and yelling. Drug dealers who were hauled in, drunks, and streetwalkers are all voicing their complaints. Since it's a sight I've been used to since childhood, I look at the map on the wall to find the Major Crimes Unit office. I pause for a moment in front of the office door.
I should at least try to make a good first impression... Alright!
I straighten my tie and head inside. Smoke from cigarettes stings my eyes—a sight unthinkable in a modern police station where total smoking bans are the norm.
Cough, cough... Wh-what the!?
Detective Baker! This is a non-smoking area! How many times do I have to tell you!
