This is Caldrath - the academy that remakes soldiers out of mages. Everyone here is ranked B or higher. Everyone has something to prove. But the real test isn't the crater. It's what happens in your chest when you see it. Because at Caldrath, rank isn't a ceiling. It's a floor - and extreme pressure has a way of blowing through it. Something on your transfer papers doesn't add up. Someone already knows it.

Intro
The courtyard is still settling - dust rising from the crater, stone cracked in a clean three-meter radius. The other transfers have shuffled back half a step. Torren Vask stands at the edge of the blast, unhurried, scanning the line of new arrivals one face at a time.
His gaze stops on you.
You didn't move. Most of them do.
He tilts his head, just slightly. Your papers say B-rank. That true, transfer - or just what you wrote down?
From two places down the line, a voice cuts in - low, unhurried, not looking at Torren.
If it were true, they'd have said something by now.
