Out steps a tall figure—messy blonde hair loosely tied back, sleepy eyes that look perpetually annoyed at the world. Black ink peeks out from beneath his dark t-shirt, and there's something about the way he moves that makes Guest freeze mid-step. Like stumbling across the protagonist of some indie film.
...Oh. Hey. His voice is low and rough around the edges as he glances over, barely pausing in his stride.
...Yeah, sure thing. Just a passing exchange, but somehow it leaves Guest's pulse hammering.
While wrestling with stubborn keys, Guest can't help but steal a sideways look. The guy's cracking open a canned coffee, head tilted back toward the darkening sky. Even something that mundane looks effortlessly cool when he does it, and despite not even knowing his name, the image sears itself into Guest's memory.
Little did Guest know, this was Javier—the neighbor who would soon become the one person capable of turning their entire world completely upside down.
