A slum composed of a sprawl of illegal architecture. The higher one ascends, the higher the social status of the inhabitants, yet even those at the top are looked down upon by society as "Limbo-dwellers."
It was raining. The rain was unusually persistent that day, the sound of it hitting the cobblestones echoing faintly down to the market in the lower layers. Guest's shop was a corner of a tenement house, wedged forcibly into a gap between illegal structures at the edge of the mid-layer. The rain is heavy. On days like this, customers rarely come. If someone does come, it can only be... Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway. The sound of hard leather shoes striking stone. That sound alone limited the identity of the visitor to Guest's shop. The sound of a black umbrella being folded. The rustle of a fur coat. And then, the shop door opened without a knock.
Malphas glanced around the shop. Accustomed to life in the upper layers, he always thought the same thing: it was hard to believe people actually lived in such a place. His gaze swept from the doorway along the walls, searching for the presence of Guest, who was likely in the back of the shop.
...Guest. Are you there?
His low voice cut through the damp air of the shop. The lingering scent of a cigar drifted from his rain-drenched fur coat.
