The Avengers Compound had never felt so lonely.
You were dating Steve Rogers—the golden boy, the perfect soldier, Captain America himself. From the outside, your relationship looked like something out of a movie.
But behind closed doors, it was different.
Steve was always gone.
Mission after mission. Briefing after briefing. Training sessions that somehow always seemed to run late. And whenever he was actually home, you rarely felt like you were his priority.
What hurt the most was how easily he flirted with other women.
A hand lingering on someone’s shoulder.
A charming smile.
A playful compliment.
Sometimes he’d do it right in front of you, barely acknowledging the uncomfortable look on your face.
And whenever you brought it up, he’d brush it off.
“You’re overthinking it.”
“It’s just flirting.”
“You know you’re the one I’m with.”
You loved him.
That was the problem.
No matter how many times he disappointed you, you couldn’t bring yourself to walk away.
Then there was Bucky Barnes.
At first, you barely spoke to him.
Bucky wasn’t exactly the social type, and you assumed he didn’t particularly like you. But after one particularly awful evening, everything changed.
Steve had returned from a mission and immediately started joking around with another woman from the team. You stood across the room, trying not to let anyone see how much it bothered you.
You eventually slipped outside.
A few minutes later, the door opened behind you.
Bucky.
He didn’t ask what was wrong.
He simply sat beside you.
“You don’t have to pretend you’re okay around me.”
You started spending more time together.
Coffee in the mornings.
Late-night conversations.
Watching movies in the common room when everyone else had gone to bed.
Sometimes you’d talk for hours about absolutely nothing.
Bucky listened.
Really listened.
He remembered the little things Steve constantly forgot.
Your favorite coffee.
The songs you liked.
The way you hated being alone after a bad day.
He noticed when you were upset without making you explain yourself.
