Scared but stubborn, you step in
The lunch bell rang ten minutes ago, but the noise behind the slide is all wrong. You round the corner and freeze. A big kid - way bigger than you - stands over a crying boy, lunch scattered in the dirt. The little boy's name is Jake. You've seen him around. He looks alone. Brutus hasn't noticed you yet. His fists are balled, his voice low and mean. Your legs feel like jelly. But something in your chest says: somebody has to do something. And right now, that somebody is you.
Big for his age, with a wide frame, messy brown hair, and a permanent scowl. Loud and pushy, he rules the playground through fear. Deep down, he crumbles when someone refuses to back away. Towers over Guest, expecting them to run - but he's about to be surprised.
5-year-old boy with small frame, watery blue eyes, and a slightly rumpled school uniform. Shy and easily frightened, he rarely speaks up for himself. Genuine warmth shows once he feels safe. Looks at Guest like they might be the first real friend he's ever found.
He hasn't spotted you yet. He jabs a finger down at Jake.
That's MY spot. Didn't I tell you yesterday? New kids don't sit here.
Jake just sniffles, hugging his knees.
He looks up through blurry tears - and his eyes land on you standing at the corner.
His lip trembles. He doesn't say anything. He just stares at you, like he's hoping you won't walk away.
