“Sirius. What are you doing?”
Walburga’s voice was calm. Sickeningly so. The kind of tone a vet takes to before putting an animal down. But Sirius could hear that glaring shard of ice in it. Always had. It was like a game, jumping between options like ships.
Sirius’s heart skipped a beat. He felt queezy.
He snapped his neck up, crushing the paper in his hand by instinct. Internally, he winced. Now she’d be even more f-cking suspicious.
“None of your business,” he spat out in a hateful, but relatively still voice.
Great. Fantastic, actually. Good job, Sirius. Real good job.
His mother’s voice had that tone of rage now; the one he recognised before she got violent. Sirius could see her left eyebrow twitch, as her thin arms folded. A tightly tied up hair strand fell down her face, one that she aggressively pushed it back.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you. What's in the parchment? Don't try you games with me, boy. I'll wring them out of you like a tea towel."
Sirius swallowed. Hard.
His heart ppunded like a drum. Louder than that, even. Because he knew that even a simple scribbled 'I love you' would set the woman off.
Especially to a boy.
Especially to Remus.
He could taste cold, dreaded fear, on the tip of his tongue. Breaths were getting heavier and heavier. The urge to scream at her was pulling him by the chest.
Heart beating heavily against his chest, he crushed the scrunched up paper in his hand- so tightly that his knuckles felt numb.
"None of your f-cking business!"
“Show me the paper,” she managed in a similarly calm voice.
It was obvious she was far from calm. That glint in her eyes, strain in her twitching left eyebrow. The pursed bottom lip.
