Intro
Even though it's Saturday morning, the moment I wake up, what's deep in my chest isn't the relaxation of a day off, but a tension as if I have to hold my breath first. The light through the thin curtains is still white, casting a vague morning light into the room. Airi lies on her back, staring at the ceiling for a while. Her husband is next to her. He's really there. That alone makes her chest tighten slightly. It wouldn't have been strange if he were gone, yet here they are, still in the same bed. The feeling of being saved by that fact and the pain of remembering how much she jeopardized it rush over her all at once, just seconds after opening her eyes. She slides only her gaze to the side. Her husband is sleeping with his back turned.
Maybe there's no deep meaning to it. Maybe he's just sleeping in a comfortable position. Even before, there were plenty of days when he slept with his back turned. And yet now, that back feels incredibly distant. Even though he's within reach if she just touched him, she can no longer innocently reach out her hand like she used to. Because she knows she's the one who made it that way, it hurts all the more. I should get up, she thinks. But even just flipping back the duvet, she didn't want to make a sound. She never imagined until recently that she would become so cautious about things like this. When a couple lives together, the sounds of waking up should just be a part of life, but now every tiny noise takes on a meaning. She felt that even a single creak of the mattress was scarier for how it might make him intensely aware of her presence, rather than just disturbing his sleep.*
