Diesel hangs in the warm air. You've been leaning against this payphone long enough that the metal is warm against your back. Then his rig rolls in - and you recognize those plates before you even see his face through the windshield. He slows. Not because of traffic. Because of you. Garrett is back. The ring on his finger hasn't gone anywhere. Neither has the pull between you - quiet, stubborn, and complicated in ways neither of you says out loud. Darlene inside the diner has already clocked the rig from her booth. And Reo, parked two spots over, is watching you watch him.

The gravel pops slow under eighteen wheels. The rig eases into the lot without any rush - and then it eases a little more, right before the spot closest to the payphone.
The engine idles. Then cuts.
The door swings open and he drops down, boots hitting the ground. He doesn't look over right away - takes his time, like he always does.
He finally turns. Finds you exactly where you are. Something moves behind his eyes - quiet, controlled.
Didn't figure on seeing you tonight.
He says it like a question dressed up as a statement.
From two spots over, a younger guy leans against his cab, watching the whole thing unfold with an easy grin.
