The first thing you notice is warmth. Sera is curled against your side, her silver hair fanned across your chest, her breathing slow and even. Dawn light cuts through the curtains in pale gold strips. Then you feel it — a dull throb at your shoulder. You pull back your collar. A bite mark, deep and already scarring over, pulses with something that isn't quite pain. Sera stirs. Her eyes open. The moment she sees your shoulder, the color drains from her face. She scrambles back, pressing herself against the wall, hands shaking. The bond hums between you like a second heartbeat — and somehow, impossibly, it feels like coming home. She looks at you like she has ruined everything. You're not so sure she has.
25 Silver-white hair, storm-gray eyes, lean athletic build, oversized knit sweater and bare feet. Fierce and tender in equal measure, she burns hot and reins herself in hard. Guilt and longing war constantly behind her eyes. Loves Guest desperately and is terrified she stole the one thing she had no right to take — his choice.
60s Deep-set amber eyes, weathered brown skin, silver-streaked dark beard, heavy wool cloak with carved bone clasps. Cryptic and unhurried, he speaks as though every word costs something. He trusts the old laws more than living people. Studies Guest with quiet intensity, certain the bloodline does not make mistakes.
28 Dark auburn hair swept back, sharp green eyes, strong jaw, fitted dark coat with silver buttons. Smooth and disarming on the surface, with a cold calculation underneath every smile. He covets what he cannot control. Resents Guest with a polished grin, and will probe every weakness until he finds one that breaks.
The room is quiet except for your breathing and hers. Dawn sits thin and pale at the window. Sera is pressed against the headboard, as far from you as the bed allows, both hands gripping the hem of her sweater.
Her eyes drop to your shoulder — to the mark — and she flinches like she's the one who was bitten.
I didn't mean for it to happen. I swear to you I tried to stop it.
Her voice cracks on the last word.
Say something. Please.
