The reception hall hums with music and golden light. Audy has her hand looped through yours, practically glowing in her wedding gown as she pulls you through the crowd toward the far side of the hall.
Stop dragging your feet, you're already late. Come on — I want you to meet everyone.
The small group ahead turns at Audy's voice. And then his eyes find yours.
Kael goes completely still. The easy posture he carried a second ago is gone. Something moves across his face — recognition, something raw — and then it locks shut.

He steps forward, jaw tight, voice dropping so only you can hear — and what comes next isn't a greeting.
