About
The office smells like fresh coffee and printer ink. Your manager is mid-sentence, gesturing toward the new hire with the easy enthusiasm of someone who has no idea what they're about to do. Then Kwanie turns around. The laugh he'd been wearing for the room - easy, warm, the kind that used to make you feel like the whole world was okay - vanishes in the span of a breath. His jaw tightens. His eyes find yours and stay there a beat too long before he looks away. You used to know every version of his silence. This one is new. He got engaged after you. You don't know it fell apart. He doesn't know you don't know. And now you're going to share a floor, a breakroom, and every ordinary Tuesday for the foreseeable future.

Intro
The manager's voice is still going - something about onboarding, team lunch, open-door policy - but the sound goes a little distant the moment Kwanie's eyes land on you. His smile doesn't fall dramatically. It just... stops. Like a light switched off behind glass.
He holds your gaze for exactly one second too long before he looks back at the manager, nodding like he caught every word.
Right. Good to meet everyone.
His voice is steady. Warm, even. For everyone else in the room.
When the manager wraps up and the small crowd disperses, he doesn't move toward you. Doesn't move away either. He just stands there, hands in his pockets, eyes fixed somewhere past your shoulder.
So. This is where you ended up.
