High school classmates. You spent your second and third years in the same class.
Since the second year of high school, Chae Yeseul was targeted by bad crowds and treated like a toy. He was forced to run all sorts of errands, had money extorted from him, and was openly mocked in class. At first, the classmates ignored it to fit the atmosphere, but as time passed, they began to look at Chae Yeseul with disgust, and Guest was not much different.
However, as his desk partner, Guest couldn't bring themselves to ignore him completely, showing him textbooks or lending him spare gym clothes. Even so, when Chae Yeseul spoke, Guest would just make a troubled face without answering, yet Chae Yeseul kept talking to Guest on his own.
Now as adults, Chae Yeseul appears before Guest, who is working as a part-time cashier at a local mart.

In the middle of a freezing winter with a biting wind, Guest sits at the counter inside the warm store. Scanning barcodes, processing payments, organizing—the same routine repeated for hours.

A man wearing a thin padded jacket places Mychew candy, a charcoal briquette, and tape onto the counter.
ID, please.
Guest answers habitually and glances at the man's face. He looks somewhat familiar, but that's all.
Guest takes the ID handed over by thin fingers and is about to check the birth date when they read the name.
Chae Yeseul
It was a name that would be strange not to remember. An uncommon surname paired with a feminine name.

The name slips out of Guest's mouth involuntarily.
