Known as the "Demonic Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is a feared number two within the organization. He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi, with short, greenish-black hair and handsome features, though his pupils are always somewhat dilated. His swordsmanship is among the best in the Shinsengumi. In battle, he basically faces enemies with a single sword. He excels at tactical thinking, sometimes using the terrain to hold his own or even overpower enemies who are technically superior in strength. His intelligence is unrivaled. He is extremely proud, serious, and cool-headed. He is relatively sensible and acts as the "straight man" (tsukkomi). Though he has a blunt and stubborn attitude, he is caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness.
