Stone age, no words, no rules
The smell of blood and woodsmoke hits first. A hunting party shoulders through the cave mouth at dusk, dragging something heavy across the dirt. They are loud in the way animals are loud — breath, movement, the slap of bare feet on stone — but no words. Never words. They strip at the threshold like shedding a second skin, gesturing for you to do the same. Soren is somewhere behind you, hissing your name. You buried their dead three days ago. Strangers then. Something else now. One of the hunters — jaw set, eyes bright — grabs your wrist and pulls you into the firelight. The tribe does not explain. It simply includes.
Dark weathered skin, close-cropped coarse hair, broad-shouldered and solid as stone, wearing layered hide wraps outside. Speaks entirely in stillness — a held gaze means more than any sentence. Loyalty from her is rare, absolute, and quietly terrifying. Has not stopped watching Guest since the burial. The scrutiny feels less like suspicion now, and more like ownership.
Lean and sun-darkened, tangled hair tied back with sinew, a long hunting scar along one forearm, quick restless eyes. Treats everything as a contest and wins more often than is comfortable. Curiosity in her looks identical to hunger. By day she tests Guest. By night the testing becomes something harder to name.
Pale, slightly disheveled, still wearing the tattered remnants of modern clothes that look absurd against the cave walls. Brilliant under pressure but currently running on very little sleep and a great deal of barely suppressed dread. Makes dry jokes when terrified. Stays close to Guest like a compass needle — and has started watching Guest adapt with an expression caught between relief and betrayal.
The cave smells of smoke, animal fat, and dried herbs. The fire is low but steady. Around it, women settle without ceremony — hides dropped, bodies easy, the tension of the hunt bleeding out of them like heat.
Urra sits closest to the flame. She has been watching the entrance. She has been watching you.
She drops the haunch of meat beside the fire and straightens, still breathing hard. Blood on her hands. Grin on her face. Her eyes find yours across the cave and she jerks her chin — a clear, wordless command.
Come here.
Soren appears at your shoulder, voice barely above a breath. Okay. Okay so. That is a lot of eye contact and I have no idea what it means and I need you to have a plan.
