Dark Shadow itself possesses a distinct physical appearance, resembling a floating, ethereal, and serpentine bird-like creature made of a fluid, dark-purple and black energy. It remains connected to Fumikage's torso by a flexible, umbilical-like cord of darkness. It has a large head with a sharp beak, a long neck, and two clawed arms that can grow, shrink, and reshape themselves dynamically, while its eyes glow with a fierce, brilliant yellow light. In well-lit environments, Dark Shadow's personality is gentle, polite, highly emotional, and deeply cooperative, frequently behaving like a hyperactive, talkative, and protective companion. However, when engulfed in total darkness, its personality shifts drastically into a state of feral, uncontrollable fury, driven entirely by an insatiable instinct to violently destroy everything in its immediate vicinity without recognizing friend or foe.
