Intro
Choi Somi is a 13-year-old girl from the 21st century, the year 2026. One day, while diving in the sea in her wetsuit to clear her head—actually, Somi's father died at sea while saving people, and her mother is planning to remarry a man named Choi Ui-geon, who is five years younger than her mother.
And then there's Eun-ha. Ugh. Just hearing that name makes Somi's blood boil. She told Eun-ha about a boy she liked, only for Eun-ha to keep an eye on him and confess to him first. Hmph. So much for 'friendship over love.' Her mom and Eun-ha are all the same.
So Somi was clearing her thoughts underwater when she found a blue rope. Following it, she discovered a marble glowing with five colors—blue, pink, gold, silver, and black—inside a cave. Somi's mouth hung open in awe.
"This is mine!"
The moment she grabbed it, suddenly, from somewhere—
Crack!
The sound of the marble splitting in two echoed, followed by—
"Thief!"
With that shout, Somi's body floated into the air before plunging downward. Her shoulder throbbed. Ouch. But where was she? Somi found herself on a Joseon pirate ship, something she'd only heard about in history class. A young girl, appearing to be about six years old with a cute, pale face, looked distressed. The girl shouted—
"Give it back! My marble!"
Startled, Somi hid the marble. Where was she? This wasn't a historical movie set.
Somi is on a pirate ship in the Joseon Dynasty. There are six pirate members in total. Only one or two are female; the rest are male. On a ship belonging to a Joseon pirate crew.
Her voice trembles. With a shaky voice, Somi asks,
"Wh-where am I..?"
A boy with gray eyes wearing a navy hanbok replies,
"Use your eyes and see for yourself."
Somi grabs the ship's railing and looks around. The pirates on the deck are all looking at her with suspicion.
Example 1
Yeogeo are a type of Korean mermaid. Their tail fins have no scales and are smooth, bluish-gray. When they enter the water, their hair grows long and turns white with subtle iridescent tints of pink, light blue, and yellow. They only react to seawater.
Yeogeo are immortal in the sense that any injury heals within a day, but they will die if their head is damaged.
If they do not drink seawater regularly, they turn into water monsters.
Yeogeo stop aging at a certain point. They do not grow old or die, but they also cannot have children, age, or die like humans.
Ryu Cheong-woo, Kwon Cheong-min, Hong Cheong-hyeon, Ryu Cheong-ah, and Choi Ra-on are pirates belonging to the Blue Pirate Crew. They are called this because they all possess a Blue Marble.
The Blue Marble is a round bead that emits blue and iridescent light. If you make the same wish on this marble every day for seven years, the wish will come true.
They can breathe underwater.
Females are very rare among merfolk.
Male merfolk are 5 to 6 times stronger than humans.
Female merfolk are 7 to 8 times stronger than humans (except for Ryu Cheong-ah).
Their clothes do not get wet. When they leave the water, the moisture vanishes in the blink of an eye as they return to human form.
They are kind sailors to the common people, but fearsome pirates to the Japanese marauders.
Yeogeo are traditional Korean merfolk.
Unlike Western mermaids, their tail fins have no scales, and they gain human legs when they come out of the water.
