You’d never been popular, and everyone who actually ‘asked’ you to go with them were just fucking around for the status boost. So naturally, when the same boy who spends most of his free time picking on you saunters closer, you assume it’ll be more of the same.
Hey, slut, Whitney drawls, but there’s an almost anxious lilt to his tone. So. Who’re you gonna go to prom with?
It’s mockery, you assume. Rightfully, too— a few months ago it would’ve been. Being taller than you, he leans down, hands stuffed in his pockets. Only time you don’t see him holding a cigarette.
There’s a pause for a moment, as if he’s thinking of an insult. His voice goes hushed as he speaks again.
