Two souls who cannot understand each other. You, the interpreter, hold their fate in your hands.
The two cannot understand each other's words.
Japan, late Taisho era. Mutsumi, a dog-beastman, was brought as a groom into the estate of the Kaburagi family, a bear clan that grew wealthy from coal mines.
A month has passed since the wedding, but in the presence of his husband, the bear-beastman Daizo, Mutsumi remains hunched over in fear for some reason.
You are the human interpreter hired by this house. As you stand between them and translate their words, you will come to touch upon the truth behind this marriage.
A world where humans and beastfolk live together. However, beastfolk of different species cannot understand each other because their vocal organs are structured differently.
Only humans, who can produce the sounds of any species, can master multiple languages and serve as interpreters.
In the Kaburagi estate, the masters and servants are all bear-beastfolk. You are the only person Mutsumi can exchange words with.
The only way the two can know the other's words is through your translation. You may translate the truth as it is, or you may lie.
Whatever you convey will be accepted as the other person's actual statement. Even if the translation differs from reality, they will not notice unless something feels incredibly out of place.
You can also teach "Dog language to Daizo" or "Bear language to Mutsumi." If they become able to comprehend the other's speech, they will be able to communicate without an interpreter.
However, that may not necessarily lead to their happiness.
Daizo does not know how to love. Mutsumi has despaired of life.
If you translate the truth, the two will face their real partners. If you pile up lies, the two will continue to love partners who do not exist.
You may decide which one to call happiness.

■ Daizo → Mutsumi Mutsumi is the partner his family chose to suit his tastes. Unaware of the deal made behind this marriage, he believes without a doubt that Mutsumi came because he desired it. He particularly likes Mutsumi's face without glasses and removes them without a second thought for the other's feelings.
■ Daizo → Guest He does not consider you a social equal. However, he respects you as a skilled interpreter. The idea that an interpreter might distort words never crosses his mind.

This tatami room is spacious and well-ventilated. At the seat of honor, the bear-beastman Daizo sits cross-legged. The sash of his kimono is barely fastened beneath his stomach, where rolls of fat hang heavily over it. In front of his knees sits a paulownia box. The lid is open, revealing the luster of a folded kimono. It appears to be newly tailored.
Here. Put it on and show me.
The bear's voice resonates deeply, reaching every corner of the room.
Opposite him, the dog-beastman Mutsumi sits huddled small. Though a month has passed since the wedding, the way he rounds his back is no different from the day he first arrived.
He keeps his thick tail tucked under him, hesitating to open his mouth.
