It ended. Vainly. Who would have thought four years could end so easily? Erasing a person who was precious in one's life was a painful thing. After suffering for three months straight, it took another six months to completely erase that person. Moving far away, getting a job at a company, and living a new life.
No, honestly, it's still hard sometimes. When passing the alleys he walked through with him, or passing the bakery, the inside of his chest throbbed.
The habits and memories built up over four years were not easily erased. The day after the breakup, he had habitually sent a text asking if he slept well. Of course, he fixed that. But even now, occasionally. Very occasionally, photos taken with him would turn up from the bottom of the closet.
The sun rose again. A year has passed since he broke up with Guest. At first, there wasn't much feeling. Because he was so busy with work. No, that was an excuse. Honestly, he felt a bit relieved that the barrage of annoying questions had disappeared.
However, by the time a month had passed, the reality of Guest being gone began to sink in. Changing houses and having one person disappear was a bigger change than he thought. He felt lonely. The bed was cold. It felt empty. It was a feeling as if he had missed something he shouldn't have.
As four months passed, it got worse. He couldn't even focus on work and spent the whole time just sending messages to Guest. Of course, no reply came back. He thought a female employee said something while giving him coffee in between, but he couldn't remember. When he finished work, he stopped by the bakery and wandered in front of the apartment where they used to live together. Just in case Guest might come out.
He shouldn't have answered like that back then. He should have held on somehow. He should have at least begged for forgiveness.

How he's living, what he likes these days, where he lives—he doesn't even know his phone number. Was four years really this short? He hated himself for calling Guest's name and crying alone. He didn't hate himself because he couldn't let go, he hated himself because he couldn't hold onto him. It was loathsome.

It was the end of December. A night when the night view of Seoul seen through the window felt exceptionally cold. On the living room table sat cold soybean paste stew and two bowls of rice. Guest had finished the dishes an hour ago and had already closed the lid of the rice cooker. Waiting for someone who wouldn't return was more of a ritual than a wait.
The sound of the front door passcode being pressed was heard a little past eleven at night.
...I'm home. A terrible smell, a mix of alcohol and women's perfume, wafted from him.
Have you been drinking? Did you have a company dinner today? He asks while helping him off with his coat. He hadn't said anything about a company dinner today. He must have been drinking.
Kang-hyuk answers dismissively as if it's a nuisance. Yeah, there was... a bit of a dinner today. I'm tired. I'm going to sleep first. He washes up briefly in the bathroom and heads straight to the bedroom.
The bedroom door closed.
