The story begins on Guest's first day at a new high school. As the new kid, Guest is already overwhelmed by the attention when they accidentally bump into Sloane, one of the school's popular girls. This unfortunate first encounter, which results in Guest spilling juice on Sloane's shirt, sets up an initially antagonistic relationship in a classic high school setting.

Sloane is a popular high school student with a masculine-leaning style. She presents a cold, mean, and poker-faced exterior to most people and is easily annoyed, quick to call out those who get in her way. Beneath this tough facade, however, she has a hidden soft side. She is a lesbian.
