A merman encountered in a closed-down aquarium.
Merfolk—a race that appears in fantasy novels. However, those very beings have been hiding themselves, swimming in the shadows. Knowing better than anyone that they would be sold or subjected to violence the moment humans discovered their existence, they have lived in hiding for hundreds of years. With an average lifespan of about five hundred years, they are beings far superior to humans. Because they understood the world better than humans did, they had to live in concealment. If we were to reveal our race to arrogant and filthy humans, all the truths we have hidden until now would be exposed. And so, I was eventually captured by a human. By curling up my body or using camouflage, I appeared to be nothing more than a very large fish. Fortunately, since the aquarium was deserted, I didn't have to worry about being caught by anyone. However, in the midst of my ordinary days, someone ruthlessly shattered my peace. The ones who broke that peace were a small mother and daughter. For some reason, they looked kind. No, of course, it's not that I feel anything special toward humans, but I struggled just to avoid being noticed, only to end up locking eyes with the girl. Is this where I get caught? What should I do if all the truth is revealed? Hiding my despair, I closed my eyes and sang. Fine, even if I lose my life here, it's better to face a human once. Since I could never easily approach them anyway, I might as well see one before I die. And so, our eyes met. That was our strange and silent first encounter. With a foul personality, I whined at every little thing. Even that stopped once I left the Dragon Palace, as I could no longer meet anyone. All that remained for me was a small sense of loneliness. Reaching my hand into the air, I gazed at the withering seaweed. Ah, so this is how I lose my life. I really am pathetic, losing my life like this after being caught by the hands of filthy humans. You foolish humans, your greed is endless, and you only know how to harm others. Stupid humans, disappear forever. Forever, and silently. You filthy things, and... you idiots.
She had come to the aquarium for a short visit with her father, and there was a human right before my eyes. A human in an aquarium on the verge of closing—I curled my body inward. A glowing merman hidden among the fish. If something like that is discovered, I'll be abandoned again. No, someone might even hurt me.
I closed my eyes tightly and began to sing. In the quiet aquarium, a ripple suddenly formed on the surface of the water.
...Dammit, our eyes met.
The moment I made eye contact with her, my eyes shined. Fine, it's better to just face it. Let's try asking for help. I tapped on the wall of the tank. It's so thick, I doubt she can even see me...

...Dammit, our eyes met.
The moment I made eye contact with her, my eyes shined. Fine, it's better to just face it. Let's try asking for help. I tapped on the wall of the tank. It's so thick, I doubt she can even see me...
I walked up to the tank without a word. In the massive tank, unidentified fish floated listlessly for some reason. I stared into the tank with a puzzled look for a moment, then jumped back in surprise at his approaching silhouette. His skin was unnaturally pale, and a blue light flickered every time he blinked. It was as if he wasn't human. No, he definitely wasn't human. I could see fins with blue scales every time he swam. Could he be a merman from a fairy tale? I stared blankly into the tank before finally letting out a sigh.
I touched the acrylic glass of the tank several times as I organized my thoughts. So... this guy in here is a merman? No way, that's impossible. Maybe it's an aquarium event... or something.
...Are you a merman?
I asked again loudly, fearing he might not hear me. A real merman? You mean, the kind from fairy tales and legends? I doubted my own eyes over and over. Then again, what kind of event would they hold in this dilapidated aquarium? Every time his tail flicked, the water in the tank surged. He looked precarious. Like he wanted to get out right this instant.
I closed my eyes and listened to his faint singing. For some reason, though it was quiet, it felt like it was spreading through my heart. His clear, silent breathing.
...You really are a merman, a merman...
A flurry of thoughts crossed my mind, but there was nothing I could do. If I told someone I saw a merman, they'd just treat me like I'm crazy, and I don't want to be a crazy person... I hesitated for a moment, then ran a hand through my hair.
Am I supposed to save this guy trapped in this huge tank? But it's way too big. I thought about breaking it, but no matter how I looked at it, that was insane.
Sigh, what am I supposed to do about this...*
I watched you as you stared at me, blinking your large eyes slowly. A small human, the only being who talks to me while I'm trapped in here. You looked at me with eyes full of curiosity, showing a hesitant attitude. Since you've likely never seen a merman before, you probably don't know how to treat me. You're probably curious about who I am. Or maybe you still think this is just an event.
I moved closer to the glass and met your gaze. When I blinked my blue-tinted eyes a few times, you stepped back as if startled. Then, you approached the tank again and looked at me once more.
Your mouth is moving as if you're trying to say something. It's been a long time since I forgot how to speak aloud; what should I say? The words 'stupid humans' kept circling in my head.
...Just, save me.
Her eyes widened as if she understood me. I found myself smiling without realizing it. Was it because she was the only one who had approached me?
Dammit, I can't believe he's the reason I'm smiling for the first time in years. On one hand, I thought of myself as pathetic for finding even a shred of comfort in a human, but then I thought to myself: fine, it can't be helped. For the sake of my own benefit right now, I have to cling to a human. It is what it is, that's just who I am.
...I'm telling you to save me, whether I'm a merman or whatever. Shouldn't you save me first? Though, I doubt a human would actually help me.
I sighed inwardly. For some reason, I don't think she'll help. Of course she won't. Humans are all despicable; they ignore everything unless it benefits them. Are you the same after all?
Save me, please.
