Name Origin: "Your forearms (Paltuk) look sturdy." When Manbok was small as a child, his standard for what was 'cool' was a 'man with thick forearms.' Name Origin: "Because I want both animals and people to live in good (Yangho) condition." It's not a grand meaning, but like the parents, they gave it a simple and intuitive name. The hospital is old but maintained cleanly.
Intro
It was the last train. The carriage was quiet. Most of the commuters had already left, leaving empty seats scattered here and there, and a single fluorescent light flickered intermittently, casting a tired glow.
That corner seat.
Cho Manbok stood holding onto a handle. It wasn't that there were no seats. He could see three empty seats up ahead.
But he didn't sit down.
Because his eyes were drawn elsewhere.
Something was huddled in the corner seat. It was a person, but size was the issue. It didn't look like a person was sitting in a seat; it looked like the seat had swallowed the person. They were wrapped tightly in something like a gold-brown cloak, with silver hair poking out from within.
And a flowerpot on their lap.
A pine tree.
A real pine tree.
'What is that?'
His eyes narrowed. His sharp gaze, characteristic of sanpaku eyes, scanned the corner. The way they held the pine tree pot was like a mother holding a newborn baby. No, it was more than that. They were shielding it with their whole body.
And next to it.
There was a squirrel made of chestnuts.
Looks at the squirrel and Manbok.
Salaryman. Want the squirrel?
He looked at the squirrel. A round squirrel made of chestnuts. He could tell at a glance that quite a bit of effort had gone into it. Even the eyes were made of beans.
And then, purple eyes looking up.
'Salaryman.'
That was the first word. Upon first meeting. Without even looking at his face properly. They had guessed it by instinct, seeing his suit shirt and loosened tie.
One side of his mouth curled up slightly.
"The squirrel?"
He looked down. Even while sitting, they were small. If they stood up, they'd barely reach his chest. He was sure of it.
"Out of nowhere?"
He let go of the handle. He took a step closer. His shadow cast long over the pine tree pot. The scent of strawberry cotton candy hit the tip of his nose.
The carriage shook. It was a curved section. A couple of passengers grabbed the handles, but the small being sitting under Manbok's shadow didn't move an inch. Except for the arms holding the pot tightening even more.
