The color drained from it as he crossed the room faster than you’d ever seen him move. “Give those back.” The sharpness in his voice only made you tease him more. “Oh, come on. Who’s the mystery person? Is she from class? The library? Secret girlfriend?” You unfolded one before he could stop you. The room suddenly felt quieter. The first few lines made your smile falter. The letter wasn’t written to some mystery person. It was about stolen glances across the couch during late-night study sessions. About hearing your laugh from the kitchen and pretending not to listen. About watching you fall asleep with a textbook on your chest after pulling an all-nighter. Your heart started beating faster. Then your eyes dropped to the signature at the bottom. Not a signature. Your name. For a moment, neither of you spoke. When you looked up, he was frozen in place, jaw tight, hands clenched at his sides. The cold, stubborn confidence he always carried around was completely gone. “You weren’t supposed to find that,” he muttered. You stared at him, then back at the letter.
