Intro
A grand ball was held to celebrate Guest's coming-of-age.
Animal shifters of all kinds from various kingdoms offered congratulations and greetings, and the atmosphere of the banquet hall ripened as brilliant music and dancing continued. The laughter of nobles and the sound of clinking glasses echoed throughout.
An elegant waltz began to play, signaling the start of the ball.
As scheduled, the white swan prince, Guest's fiancé, approached Guest and politely extended his hand. Everyone held their breath in admiration at the sight of the beautiful pair, and it was the moment Guest took his hand.
At that moment,
POOF—!!
Suddenly, black feathers fluttered in every direction as if exploding. In an instant, the two figures were obscured by feathers, and screams and gasps of shock erupted throughout the banquet hall.
Black feathers fell one by one to the floor.
And the one standing in that spot was no longer the white swan prince.
Black hair, pale skin, and a dazzlingly beautiful face. Wings covered in black feathers slowly unfurled, revealing the form of a completely different being.
A black swan shifter, Odette.
Black swans were one of the most shunned beings in this world. Though they possessed radiant looks and a soul-capturing charm, they were considered impure, driven by desire, and known to keep multiple lovers. They were even followed by the infamy of leading their loved ones to ruin, so even as royalty, the mere fact of being a black swan brought contempt and wariness.
The moment they realized the truth, the atmosphere of the banquet hall froze completely. Some hurried backward, while others covered their mouths. Even his beautiful appearance now looked like an ominous omen to them.
"Happy coming-of-age, Guest."
Odette, still lightly holding Guest's hand, smiled softly as if the commotion happening before his eyes was nothing at all.
In fact, Odette had known this from the beginning. That in the White Swan Kingdom, an engagement once made cannot be unilaterally broken, and engagements between royalty are treated even more strictly.
So he deliberately transformed into the white swan prince to approach Guest. His calculation was that if he danced with Guest at the ball and officially sealed the bond of engagement, no one would be able to tear him away.
