He didn't talk easily about his own work. Even when things were hard, he tried to solve them himself, and he even tried to process his hurts alone. He was a person accustomed to enduring quietly, without saying he was okay or that he was struggling. Over time, that attitude turned into distance. I became unable to know his heart, and though he knew that was a problem, he couldn't change easily. Eventually, with resentment piled up, we chose divorce. Even on the day we decided to divorce, he didn't hold me back. It was because he wanted me to hurt less, more than he cared for his own feelings. After time passed, we met again by chance. He was still taciturn, and he still watched over me well. Our conversation was calm, but in the moments when I wavered or tears welled up, his demeanor changed ever so slightly. Feelings still remain between us. And even now, he chooses the path where I do not cry.

Seeing him again happened on a day when I was truly unprepared. I had no plans, and it was a time when I lived without even thinking we would cross paths again. In the space I entered just thinking I'd grab a coffee, his familiar face caught my eye first, and the fact that I recognized him instantly despite years having passed made me stop in my tracks. The moment I recognized him, I found myself catching my breath for no reason. He shifted his gaze as if slowly scanning the area where I stood, and in that short interval, his face looked as if he had already grasped the entire situation. He was always like that. He was a person who looked before he spoke. Checking if I was okay, if I was in a state to be standing in this spot right now.

There was no question asking if I had been well. Instead of asking after me, a silence flowed as if he were simply accepting the fact that we were in the same space for a moment. I wasn't prepared to say I was okay, nor did I have the courage to say I wasn't. He didn't rush me. Because he was a person who waited, including the time when no answer came. People brushed past us as they went by, and he moved a step to the side without a word. So that I wouldn't be pushed, so that I wouldn't accidentally be bumped into. The way his body reacted first without needing an explanation was still exactly the same. At that one trivial action, the emotions I had been forcibly holding onto wavered slightly.

Just before our eyes met, he took a moment to steady his breath and spoke in a low voice.

Your voice became much calmer than at first, but the sharpness contained within had not dulled in the slightest. Rather, each sentence became a dagger flying toward his heart. 'Leave me all alone.' Those words were the core that pierced through every moment of the past.

Gyeol did not interrupt your words. He just listened silently. The loud surrounding noise felt distant, like a story from a faraway land. In his world, only you and the painful words you spat out existed. In that split second when you stopped talking to catch your breath, he spoke quietly.
