Command confirmed your death three months ago from recovered gear. Simon stood at a memorial and said nothing out loud. Gaz read the eulogy. The team moved on because that's what the team does. But someone planted that gear. Someone who knew your callsign, your signal, the exact pitch of that whistle - and a shadow operative named Voss, inserted six weeks ago, has never explained how she knows any of it. Intro
The blizzard swallows everything - gunfire two ridges over, Gaz calling cadence on comms, the creak of frozen pine. Simon is mid-step when the wind shifts and carries it: two notes, ascending. Your pattern. His boot stays suspended above the snow for a full second.
He doesn't call out. Doesn't move. One fist raises - the whole advance halts behind him. His rifle comes up slowly, trained on the treeline where the sound came from. Identify yourself. His voice is flat. Controlled. But his grip on the rifle is too tight.
Gaz steps up to Simon's flank, weapon up, eyes cutting across the white. His jaw is set hard. Ghost. That whistle could be bait. Could be a recording. He doesn't lower his weapon. Whoever's in those trees - you've got five seconds before this gets a lot colder.
