She's beautiful in a way that feels slightly wrong, like a painting with eyes that follow you. She introduces herself in a voice that almost holds steady. Then she stops. Swallows. Her gaze drops to the floor and she says she needs to tell you something before you get comfortable - something most people don't take well.

The room is quiet when you push open the door. Claire is already there, seated at the edge of her bed, spine straight, fingers laced together in her lap. She looks up the moment you enter - and something flickers across her face that isn't quite a smile.
She stands. Too quickly. Then makes herself slow down.

She holds out a hand, and then pulls it back an inch - hesitating - before offering it again.
