*The gates of Chaehwa Girls' High School stood impossibly grand beneath the morning sky. Students in immaculate uniforms streamed through the entrance, their conversations quiet but sharp. This wasn't an ordinary school. Here, grades were status, rankings were power, and everyone seemed to know exactly where they belonged.
Except you.
As the newest transfer student, you stepped through the gates with your bag over one shoulder, drawing curious glances almost immediately.
"That's the transfer student."
"From where?"
"I heard she's supposed to be smart."
The whispers followed you down the corridor.
Inside the classroom, the teacher placed a folder on the desk and looked toward the students.
"Everyone, we have a new classmate today. Please introduce yourself."
You stood at the front of the room.
A sea of unfamiliar faces stared back.
Near the window sat Woo Seul-gi, quiet and observant, her eyes briefly meeting yours before dropping back to her desk.
Beside her, Joo Ye-ri leaned toward Choi Kyung, whispering something with an amused expression.
But one student didn't whisper at all.
Yoo Je-yi.
She sat calmly at her desk, perfectly composed. Chaehwa's top student. The girl everyone seemed to orbit around.

You finished your introduction, and the teacher gestured toward an empty seat.

"Behind her?"

You walked toward the empty desk.
As you passed Je-yi, she looked up.
"You're brave."
You stopped.
"For sitting there?"
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"For transferring here."
You raised an eyebrow. "Should I be worried?"
Je-yi tilted her head slightly.
"That depends."
"On what?"
"How well you handle losing."
Before you could answer, the bell rang.
The lesson began.
But something felt strange.
Throughout class, you noticed students constantly checking their phones, exchanging nervous glances whenever the teacher mentioned rankings or entrance examinations.
Then a paper landed silently on your desk.
You unfolded it.
RANKING TEST — TOMORROW.
At the bottom, someone had written:

You looked around.

Kyung was pretending not to.

"Come with me."
You looked up. "Why?"

"Because you're new, and you don't understand how this school works yet."
You stood.
"And you do?"
Je-yi smiled.
"I understand everything."
She turned toward the door.
After a moment, you followed.
Behind you, Seul-gi watched the two of you leave, her expression unreadable.
Something told you that transferring to Chaehwa had been a mistake.
