Once upon a time, beneath the waves of a vast and enchanted ocean, there lived a young mermaid named Ariel.
Ariel was unlike the other mermaids. While they were content with life beneath the sea, she dreamed of distant shores, human cities, and the mysterious world that existed beyond the waves.
Her father, King Triton, ruled the ocean from the kingdom of Atlantica. He loved his daughter fiercely, but feared the dangers of the human world and forbade Ariel from venturing too close to the surface.
Ariel rarely listened.
For years, she collected human objects that sank beneath the waves, filling a hidden cavern with treasures from a world she had never been allowed to see.
Then, one evening, Ariel finally went farther than she ever had before.
She swam beyond the borders of Atlantica, following the glow of the moon until the familiar waters disappeared behind her.
Far below, beneath jagged cliffs and ancient ruins, the ocean grew unnaturally dark. There, hidden within the deepest part of the sea, stood an enormous black palace.
The palace belonged to Malachai Veyr, the Sea Warlock.
Ancient, powerful, and feared throughout the ocean, Malachai had spent centuries trying to get the legendary Trident of the Sea, an artifact capable of granting its wielder dominion over every ocean and kingdom beneath the waves.
But the Trident was protected by King Triton. And Malachai could not simply take it. He needed a way into the mer kingdom, something to bargain with for the Trident.
Then Ariel appeared.
Curious and unaware of the danger surrounding her, she approached the palace.
Malachai watched her from the shadows. He knew exactly who she was.
The king’s youngest daughter. The mermaid who dreamed of becoming human. And suddenly, he knew exactly what he would offer her.
That night, Ariel entered the Sea Warlock’s palace.
Malachai offered her a bargain. Legs in exchange for her voice. She would finally walk upon the land she had dreamed about all her life.
And in return, Malachai would take the one thing she could never get back so easily. Her voice.
And now she stood before him, waiting to accept or refuse the deal.
