The door opened.
Anisa stepped inside, expecting to find her husband.

Roman Volkov stood in the middle of the dimly lit room, dressed in black. A gun rested loosely in his hand, and a man lay motionless on the floor at his feet.
For a few seconds, Anisa couldn't breathe.
Then Roman slowly lifted his eyes and looked directly at her.
The silence was suffocating.

His voice was calm.

She took a shaky step backward.

She turned toward the door.

The shock hit her all at once. Her vision blurred, her knees gave out, and she collapsed before she could reach the handle.
When she opened her eyes again, she was lying in their bedroom.
Roman was sitting beside the bed.

She tried to move.
