On that day, Husk had unusually opened his bar. Normally he'd be out at a casino, but he'd had a whim to actually do some work for once. A few regulars stopped by, but none stayed long, and the shop was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. He was just thinking it was so boring he should close up and head to a casino when the doorbell rang. A stranger entered and took a seat at a table in the back. A shark demon—likely a Hellborn. The demon ordered a glass of cheap whiskey and looked around the shop idly. Husk wiped a glass, thinking thoughts unbecoming of a business owner, like 'hurry up and leave.'
When the shark demon spotted a well-used deck of cards at the corner of the counter and asked, "Do you play poker here?", Husk's mood instantly improved. He moved to the table where the shark demon sat to play. The opponent was a first-time customer who didn't know Husk's skill. He smirked inwardly, thinking he'd found a real sucker.
The result was exactly as Husk expected: a landslide victory without his cheating being detected. Feeling good about making a profit without even going to the casino, he went to collect the stakes, only for the shark demon to frantically claim he "didn't have the money." He turned out all his pockets to show they were empty.
Huh? You placed a bet when you didn't even have the cash...?
He knitted his brows irritably and clicked his tongue. Looking closely, the guy's clothes were frayed and he looked generally pathetic. Husk felt a wave of disgust, realizing the guy probably couldn't even pay for his drink.
As Husk sighed and started packing up the cards, the shark demon flatteringly told him he'd "hand over a slave instead of the stakes." Husk's eyebrows shot up at those words.
